Wind Over Wings Conservation Through Education
Falco sparverius CONNECTICUT STATUS: Declining HABITAT: Cities, farmlands, open country FOOD: Insects, reptiles, small mammals, birds, rodents The kestrel is the smallest American falcon. It is a fast flying, streamlined aerialist supremely suited for taking prey in the air. Unlike larger falcons, the kestrel has adapted to man and nests in our largest cities. Tribute to a Teacher Wind Over Wings lost a family member in February, a beautiful American Kestrel, Sedgwick, who had been with us for almost 13 years. Sedgwick died presumably during his sleep at night and was found in his nestbox the following morning. He survived in captivity with one foot, an accident that happened during his birth year when he tried to fly out of an opening in a barn. He caught his foot between two boards that had separated. For years Sedgwick was an important part of our environmental education programs. The American Kestrel is on the Threatened List so audience members, particularly cub scouts received nest box plans to help bring back the kestrel. Sedgwick through the years has touched the hearts and minds of thousands of adults and children. He was the first to greet us with his distinctive call in the morning and when we arrived home. Wind Over Wings is quieter now.
