AMERICAN KESTREL

Falco sparverius

CONNECTICUT STATUS: Declining

HABITAT: Cities, farmlands, open country

FOOD: Insects, reptiles, small mammals, birds, rodents

The kestrel is the smallest American falcon. It is a fast flying, streamlined aerialist supremely suited for taking prey in the air. Unlike larger falcons, the kestrel has adapted to man and nests in our largest cities.

SEDGWICK

Sedgwick was brought to Wind Over Wings late one night by an animal control operator from Oakdale. He rescued this youngster during the summer of 1998. Evidently, Sedgwick was learning how to fly and decided to explore life outside of the barn where he was born. The boards had separated at the base of a hole where his parents had been flying through to bring food. In his inexperience, Sedgwick caught his foot. We immediately took him to a veterinarian who was able to save his life, but not his foot.
