HABITAT: Woodlots, forests, swamps, orchards, parks. FOOD: Wide variety of prey including rodents, snakes, and fish. The Eastern Screech Owl is a small, tufted owl named after its shrill, plaintive voice. This owl occurs in two distinct color phases: red and gray. It nests in hollowed-out tree cavities or old woodpecker holes as well as man-made nest boxes. The Eastern Screech has big, bright eyes. SASSAFRAS Sassafras is a young Eastern Screech Owl who made her home in a chimney. When the homeowner lit a fire one evening, he heard scurrying near the damper. He immediately put out the fire and called Wind Over Wings. Our rescuer, Jae Wolf responded and dismantled the damper. The little Screech Owl was brought to Wind Over Wings. We feared smoke inhalation and burned feathers from the fire but fortunately the fire had been extinguished quickly. However, she did suffer head trauma and optic nerve damage. Her eyes no longer constrict. She cannot find dinner because vision and hearing are impaired. Sassy has adjusted rapidly to her life in education.
